Bringing people together through song

More Than Just A Choir lives up to its name by offering far more than music, providing friendship, support and a strong sense of community for people affected by mental illness. Run entirely by volunteers and free for all participants, the choir has become a welcoming and inclusive space where members can build confidence, form lasting friendships and feel truly accepted.

Many members describe the choir as life-changing. One participant reflected on the impact the group had on them, describing it as the beginning of a “new life” where they felt welcomed, respected and able to enjoy themselves without judgement or expectation. Others have spoken about the unique sense of unity the choir creates, and the meaningful long-term friendships that have grown from being part of the group.

Over the years, the choir has continued to grow from strength to strength, regularly performing at local community events including the RAF Association Battle of Britain Commemoration and the Harrow Disability Arts Festival. Members have also enjoyed remarkable opportunities to perform at Lambeth Palace in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Harry.

For many members, the choir provides an essential lifeline during periods of loneliness, vulnerability or poor mental health. During difficult times, including periods of isolation, the group has helped people stay connected through a shared love of singing and companionship. One member described spending an entire day singing online with fellow choir members, calling it one of their most memorable experiences and crediting the choir with helping them through some very dark periods in their life.

Support from Harrow Giving has played a vital role in enabling More Than Just A Choir to continue its work, helping local people find friendship, connection and renewed confidence through music and community.
