Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your Grant Application

Use AI wisely.

At Harrow Giving, we recognise that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and others can be valuable resources for Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations. These tools can help save time, support research, improve drafting, and assist with writing funding applications. We support organisations using AI as part of their application process and will not reject applications simply because AI has been used.

However, we encourage applicants to use AI carefully and thoughtfully.

We have seen an increase in AI-generated applications that often appear generic, lack a clear and authentic voice, and fail to communicate the unique strengths, experiences and impact of an organisation. In some cases, organisations that previously submitted strong and compelling applications have submitted weaker applications after relying too heavily on AI-generated content. This can reduce your opportunity to demonstrate what makes your organisation distinctive and why your work matters.

When reviewing applications, we want to understand your organisation, the needs of the community you serve, the activities you plan to deliver, and the difference your work will make. Strong applications clearly demonstrate an understanding of local challenges and provide specific examples, insights and evidence drawn from your own experience.

If you choose to use AI-generated content, it is important that you:

  • Carefully review and edit all AI-generated text.
  • Ensure the application accurately reflects your organisation, your work and the communities you support.
  • Add specific details, examples and local context.
  • Maintain your organisation’s authentic voice and perspective.
  • Check all facts, figures and claims for accuracy.

Please remember that AI tools do not always provide accurate or reliable information. It is your responsibility to ensure that all information submitted within your application is truthful, accurate and a genuine reflection of your organisation’s work.

You should also take care when entering information into AI tools. Avoid sharing confidential information, personal data, intellectual property, or any information that could compromise your legal or regulatory obligations. We recommend reviewing guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) regarding data protection and the use of AI.

Whilst AI can be a useful support tool, Harrow Giving does not use AI in any part of our funding decision-making process. Every application is reviewed by a human, and we want to hear directly from you in your own words.
